Four Ways To Attack Your Stressors
Let’s say you just love big bean burritos. The problem is that big bean burritos don’t love you. You may have bigger stressors in your life than Mexican food, but let’s use that tantalizing taste tempter as an example.
Here’s what you can do:
- Relieve the symptoms: If consuming a BBB (Big Bean Burrito) gives you heartburn, take an antacid. You’ve eaten it. Your stomach rebels. Take Tums.
- Alter the stressor: If you know from past experience that consuming a BBB tastes great going down, but not so great coming back up, cut the burrito in half. Take half home. Order a child’s plate. Or, if you usually eat a BBB every day, plan to eat a BBB just once a week as a special treat.
- Accept the stressor: If you know you’d rather give up friends and family than give up your BBB, just accept that you’re going to eat it and suffer the consequences. Then, stop stressing about it and telling yourself you shouldn’t be eating this brick-sized concoction as you stuff it in your mouth. Eat, enjoy, and pay the price.
- Avoid the stressor: Vow never to eat another BBB. Never go to a Mexican restaurant again. Or, substitute something else that you also like, but that doesn’t fowl up your digestive tract.
You have choices here. The important thing is to choose an option and take action. Don’t add to your stress by stressing out over your stressor.
